You really do need to know what way the wind is blowing.

If you have your back to the wind and pull, your kite will go up.

If you face into the wind, you'll get tangled.

Trouble is, wind direction changes with a few yards. Chuck some grass in the air - see what way it goes.

And if the worst comes to the worst, copy everyone else.
